Dora Opens!
BUSHKILL, PA, June 29, 2006 — It’s “Broadway for kids” and all-out family fun as the Mountain Laurel Center for the Performing Arts presents “Dora the Explorer Live! Dora’s Pirate Adventure” for four shows July 8 and 9. Children’s programming has no bigger star than the proudly bilingual Dora, whose award-winning Nickelodeon animated TV series is the number one preschool show on television. The colorful live musical show, with actors portraying Dora and her pals, will be performed Saturday, July 8 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., and Sunday, July 9 at 1 p.m., with another performance just added at 4 p.m. Tickets, ranging from $15 to $25 each, are on sale now online or by phone through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or (570) 693-4100, or in person at the MLC Box Office on Bushkill Falls Road.
The Sunday 1 p.m. show will be sign-language interpreted by facilitators from the Northeast Pennsylvania Center for Independent Living in Scranton. A block of seats has been reserved for the deaf and hard of hearing for that performance; patrons should inform the ticket office of their request for this block when purchasing their tickets.
This full-out spectacle will be the first ever at the Mountain Laurel Center. Complete with costumes, lights, and scenery, the Tom Ridge Pavilion will close its back doors, turn on the air conditioning, and prove its theatrical presence in the Pocono Mountains with “Dora the Explorer Live!”. Then on August 19 at 8 p.m., MLCPA will continue its theatrical presence with a “musical-theater masterpiece including a full orchestra, chorus, and powerful soloists,” New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players in “The Pirates of Penzance”. Mountain Laurel Center for the Performing Arts looks forward to filling its seats with more theatrical performances in the future.
In “Dora’s Pirate Adventure”, Dora, her best friend Boots the monkey, and the rest of their animal friends embark on an exciting trip to Treasure Island. In the live stage show and on Nickelodeon’s animated hit Dora the Explorer, Dora is a seven-year-old Latina heroine whose adventures take place in an imaginative tropical world filled with jungles, beaches and rain forests. Both the TV and stage shows are designed to actively engage their audiences using a variety of learning techniques. Dora uses her bilingual skills to communicate with her friends, solve problems and reach her goals. Show co-creator Valerie Walsh says, “For many of our preschool viewers, Dora is their first encounter with a foreign language, so the show might teach them a little Spanish and make them curious and interested in learning more. For our Spanish-speaking preschool viewers, hearing Dora speak Spanish might encourage them to take pride in being bilingual.”
Mountain Laurel Center performances are held rain or shine. Parking is $5 per vehicle. All tickets for MLC events are available through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or (570) 693-4100 (a service fee applies to Ticketmaster purchases). The Mountain Laurel Center Box Office is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to curtain on all performance days.
